The traditional model of wasteful sprawling suburbs has long run its course and it's time for a fresh approach - one that's sustainable, cost-effective, and community focused. We are proposing to build an small arcology consisting of 22 condo units for Greenfield MA.
Our approach aligns with the growing trend toward smaller, more efficient homes and the search for a more sustainable lifestyle. By building small, we not only make housing more affordable but also reduce the environmental footprint of our community. This project will serve as a model for sustainable development and economical construction, addressing the urgent need for resource-efficient solutions in the face of climate change and resource scarcity.
On a 32 acre parcel at the end of Stone Farm Lane, Greenfield, MA, owned by the Valley Community Land Trust, we are leasing 7.7 acres on which the arcology is proposed to be built. On the remainder 25.5 acres, the Valley Housing Co-op owns existing duplexes on the property and has plans to create additional affordable housing. The property, while in a wild state, is far from being in healthy ecological condition. Past gravel mining operations have left the landscape scarred with pits and piles of earth, and invasive species abound mixed in with the young new tree growth. Allowing this land to come back into ecological health is part of the mission of all three entities involved in this beautiful location.
While appropriate architecture is necessary for sustainable living, it is not nearly sufficient. We can create a working infrastructure enabling the ability for residents to be more self-sufficient, but the residents themselves must thrive on their own will, and turn this infrastructure into a working small-scale arcology. This project, while on land leased from the land trust, will be managed by the residents through a condominium association, with the ability to create their own destiny.
